James Henry Lakin was born on March 11, 1838, in Ohio. At that time his father, William P. Lakin, was 46 and his mother, Sarah Bretney, was 40. He married Sarah Abigail Thompson on April 19, 1870. He later married Helen Nelson Sabin on February 11, 1890, in Duluth, Minnesota.
James Henry Lakin attended Clermont Academy and attended Upper Iowa University for two years. He did not return after the war to graduate. James served in the 3rd Iowa Regiment at Shiloh, Matamoros, and Vicksburg. Discharged as colonel. It was said he had the color shot out of his hands two or three times. He was a merchant, railroad contractor, miner, and involved in banking. Was a prominent Republican and on the staff of Governor Carpenter of Iowa. In 1890 he moved from West Union, Iowa to Brighton, Colorado.
In 1895 he moved to Salt Lake City, where he died on November 14, 1922, at the age of 84.
